A moped driver is grasping for his life after crashing near I-275

On Behalf of | Jul 27, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

An early morning rush hour crash left a moped operator fighting for his life on Thursday, July 26. The incident occurred in St. Petersburg, right off Interstate 275’s Fifth Avenue North exit just before 7:48 a.m.

Witnesses to the crash reported seeing the driver of a Toyota Prius getting off of the exit ramp in front of a 56-year-old moped operator right before the crash occurred. As the two continued to the end of the ramp, the moped collided with the rear of the vehicle.

Emergency responders arriving at the crash scene found the moped’s operator suffering from life-threatening injuries. They quickly whisked him away to Bayfront Hospital. Later that day, he was still listed as being in critical condition.

It doesn’t appear that the Prius’ driver suffered any injuries in the crash.

After evacuating the man from the crash scene, police officers turned their attention to shutting down I-275’s Fifth Avenue N exit. Morning commuters were rerouted to the 20th Street exit for several hours while the northbound Fifth Avenue remained closed.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation according to police. It’s unclear whether there is a sign at the intersection requiring motorists exiting the interstate to stop or yield or if they’re expected to merge into traffic.

Although it’s unclear what types of injuries the man suffered, the consequences of a moped or motorcycle crash can be significant. In serious injury cases, it can help to have a Tampa car accident attorney working on the case who has an ability to examine every detail to determine liability.
